Autumn is almost upon us and it is an ideal time to head outdoors and forage for some of the hedgerow bounty that nature has produced. Not only could you make some beautiful recipes but the best thing about foraging is that it is FREE!
It’s a good idea to take a good field guide with you and always be sure you can positively identify any plant before you pick it and never eat any plant you are unsure of!
Some of the best berries to forage for in September are blackberries, hawthorn berries, rosehips and elderberries.
Nuts include; hazelnuts, sweet chestnut, acorn and horse chestnut – but gather early as you will have the squirrels to contend with!
You could even collect some poppy seeds to sprinkle onto bread, cakes and rolls.
